It is important to remember, that recruits always speak in third person and conversations always end with "sir" or "ma'am." The following are some of the phrases you need to commit to memory.

  1. Recruit__________________requests permission to speak to Senior Drill Instructor, Staff Sergeant _____________ or Drill Instructor, Sergeant __________, sir."
  2. "Recruit____________________requests permission to make a head call, sir." (i.e., to go to the bathroom).
  3. When called bt a Drill Instructor or officer. "Recruit_________________reporting as ordered, sir."
  4. When speaking to a Drill Instructor or officer. "Yes, sir." "No, sir." "Aye, Aye, sir."
  5. Upon completing a conversation with a Drill Instructor or officer. "Good (morning, afternoon, or evening), sir."

All the above came from the D.E.P. book "The Making of A Marine"
